Marina was born a Nahua girl of noble lineage whose voice became exploited to change the fate of nations. As a child, she was sold into slavery — a tribute from the Aztecs to Maya traders. As a means to survive, she used her talents and amazed the Maya how quickly she learned their language. When the Spanish arrived, she became the ideal bridge as an interpreter between empires:

Through her words, Moctezuma met Hernan Cortés.
Through her voice, alliances were made, cities fell, and Tenochtitlan was conquered.

She was one of 20 enslaved women given to the Spaniards in 1519 by the natives. Cortés chose Marina as a consort, and she later gave birth to their first son, Martin — the first mestizo son of Cortés — not just a child, but a symbol of everything broken, merged, and remade.
